From arresting pro-democracy lawmakers to police brutality against protesters, political suppression is at its worst in HK's history. Though far from genuine democracy, the “one-man, one-vote” District Council Election is one chance that HK citizens can decide 35 of the 70 Legislative Council members, which can cast vote for the Chief Executive. It is very likely that actions to induce fear in public for exercising their basic rights including voting rights will continue.
HK stands between authoritarian China and the free world. As Americans, we should assert for the values we stand for. We urge the U.S. Mission to the United Nations to advocate for electoral assistance at the upcoming local election in HK on 11/24/19 to safeguard HK's remaining democracy and aid democratic advancement.
